Currently tourism in Romania is in its infancy, with few destinations reaching more than 1.000.000 tourists/year and with a poor information system (online and offline). There are only several tourist information centres and even those have limited capabilities. Tourists travel based on already known information or with the help of friends/guides either have a hard time enjoying their vacation. The lack of information (especially pre-departure information) is a major setback in choosing Romania as a destination and also deteriorates severely the tourist experience while in Romania.

Most of the already existing travel websites (from Romania) are focused only on selling accommodation with very few practical information for tourists. The international websites mostly refer to the most important attractions and only at a general level. However, from my personal experience (I did work as a strategy manager for a regional tourism board) tourists (especially foreigners) want to plan most of their journey from home, before going to their destination. They want to know if the destination is safe, how to get there, what to visit there and how, means of transport inside the destination and what accommodation to choose. At present, one year after being launched (and only 5 months after being translated in english) the website is ranked 6th in google.co.uk and 17th in google.com without any advertising and having only 2 languages: romanian and english.

Imagine a network of 10-15 such websites, translated into several major international languages and with a strong (but not expensive) marketing. Given the fact that the current Ministry of Tourism is enhancing the advertising and marketing activities for attracting new tourists and together with the emancipation of flights to Romania from everywhere in Europe, the number of potential visitors is greatly increasing. Thus the potential and opportunity for the travel websites network with detailed information for tourists.
